The small chick in the picture was hatched at the same time from the same batch of eggs. Why is it so much smaller than all the rest? The breeds are Welsummer and Australorp (the white and salt and pepper one is from someone else). Thanks in advance.

There's a thing called failure to thrive but that peep looks like it's thriving just fine.

It does not look in any way the same age as those others. Are you absolutely certain someone didn't slip in a surprise somewhere along the line?

Nope, my wife hatched them and we got the egg from the neighbor's flock. That is what is weird about it.

Are you sure your wife didn’t sneak an extra chick in while you weren’t looking? Or maybe you got a bantam out of those eggs? Although it would be bigger than that at this age.

It seems to do fine, just that it is so small. Even it's feathers are behind. It will even hide under the the big ones like they are it's mother. The neighbor has not Bantams. The egg was small and had a hard shell.

Yeah, it acts normal. I know the chicks where bought from TCS and/or Rural King. I know the Silver Laced Wyandottes from Rural King we bought, just do not look right. I kind of do not trust the breeding.

Also we noticed that it's wings are hanging lower now.

The peep does not look like it's maturing at all. A closer pic would be helpful.

That is the oddest thing I think I've ever seen. Not only is it small it's looks immature. It can't be failure to thrive, it looks so healthy.

I'd love to follow the little fart in it's journey as it gets older.

It must be some kind of endocrine issue. I couldn’t tell you what kind, but right now it’s the only thing that offers a good explanation.
