So we a dozen chicks now all about 17 weeks old and I thought they were all hens but I noticed this one has a more defined crest. But only heard one crow this morning...I read hens can sometimes crow too so I'm confused haha.

I can't see the bird well enough but with that much comb, I suspect you do have yourself a boy in the bunch.

That's a cockerel. A hen will sometimes crow, but it's pretty rare and at least in my experience only if there is no rooster around or if the flock has lost its rooster.

Yeah, that's a fella! Hens can crow whether there's a rooster around or not, and a few of mine have despite that I have an abundance of boys around, but generally they're older when it happens, over a year old in most cases. It's not impossible for a pullet to crow, but exceptionally rare, so at this age it's a pretty sure sign of masculinity.
