Today was the first day for the Guinea boys to chase each other.

I check several times a day on the girls on their nest. This afternoon when I went out the boys were missing. What the heck? They're supposed to be there guarding the girls and they didn't come when I called.

After years of watching this behavior I've come to realize there is some complexity to it. It isn't a high bird chasing a low bird. Very often a low bird antagonizes another to chase him. He'll dodge in, turn around and run a few feet. If the other doesn't take the bait he'll do it again and again, taking an occasional poke until the other bird accepts the challenge.

I saw a flash in the woods and I knew. I just hope the boys keep their wits about them and don't charge into the road.

Good thing I have neighbors who aren't bothered by them. Actually it was the one that had some of their own that had me wishing for my own flock again. Which I got.
