This is Dotty. We named it such because we were told this is a female. Now we're not so sure.

We are new to chickens...

Dotty defies everything we have read about this breed. The markings are why we are confident in the breed. But Dotty is loud and wakes us up in the morning. Dotty is NOT docile and cannot stand to be petted (the other 4 do not shy away). These are the opposite of traits we have read about this breed.

Also, since Dotty is our only Rock (the others are Brahma and Welsumer as far as we can tell), we cannot compare with any other to identify gender.

It's a cockerel and it's behavior will not get better. FWIW, it doesn't look like a full blooded barred rock. Coloring is off.

Yeah, he's a cockerel, and not a Barred Rock. Where did you get him? He honestly strikes me as a young hatchery-quality Bielefelder, but it's hard to say for sure what he is without knowing his origin.

Well... we got in touch with a friend who lives in the country and has a free-range flock. She has offered to take him.

I'm glad you can find him a home so quickly. It stinks being in an area where roosters are not allowed and you end up with a surprise.

Ah, so he could be a Bielefelder, or he could just be a hybrid like Hoover's 'Rainbow'. Anyway, glad you were able to find a home for him!
