Last Thursday a friend in town gave us 11 hens and 2 roosters as she no longer wanted to be bothered with them. So we brought the chickens home in the large dog crate and had to keep them in there while we finished the coop, at least enough to put the chickens in. The other chickens started pecking on the white chicken's butt causing it to bleed. It took over an of hour before we could put everyone in the new coop and by then the white chicken was pretty bloody and needed to be separated. Recently we took in my ranch partner's 3 grandchildren. Well, the 10 year old girl started screaming "she's on her period, she's on her period, she's on her period". I kept telling her, "Chickens don't have periods".At the same time her almost brother (will be 9 on the 21st) screamed"what is a period, what is a period, what is a period". I just told him "something human woman have, not chickens."

That sounds chaotic lol two screaming kids and an injured chicken and you having to explain periods to them... awkward.

Not really sure. Maybe, but this is really a guess, is this chicken had broken tail feathers when we got her. Maybe there had already been some pecking before hand and then the close quarters made it worse. The children claimed one specific bird had been doing most of the pecking. I really don't know as I was busy with other stuff.

My ranch partner needs hearing aides and it had been very chaotic. I asked him if he heard what the kids had been saying but he had not paid any attention at the time, so I told him. His response was "a period is a dot at the end of a sentence."
