Two broody girls, one nest box, no eggs (because I take them).

Squish. :p

I never asked or you never said or maybe you did. Do you have a rooster?
I do have a rooster (a very good boy), but I bought 3, 5 week old pullets about a month or so ago and don't need any more chicks. That brings me up to 9 chickens total. Once the littles are fully integrated it's going to be a tight squeeze in the coop at night. I'm not trying to break these from brooding---yet. We'll see how it goes.
This is when I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that anymore.

@dawg53 faces the same challenges for the same reasons.
I hate it when hens go broody. They are a pain in the neck. I just broke my broody Wyandotte. My Heritage Barred Rock went broody day before yesterday and I'm still breaking her.

How do you go about breaking them, @dawg53? I put them both in a cage (with food and water) out in the run yesterday evening. Of course, they're both still clucking like mad today

I broke the Heritage Barred Rock also. For the Wyandotte and the H- Barred Rock hens that WERE broody, their nest boxes were cat carriers. It was easy to remove them so they didnt have a nest to go to. That worked.

I've also caged broody hens with food and water and put them in the garage where they cant see the other birds and visa-versa. They clucked too.
I remember one of the stubborn Light Brahma's stayed broody for 2 long weeks. Cleaning up her mess wasnt fun.
Then one morning all of a sudden I noticed she had stopped clucking and was eating normally. I was able to put her back in the pen still caged for a couple of days so the others could get used to her again. It all worked out.

I did the same with a Black Star. Yes, a Black Star which is unheard of. Yet, it happened to me, my luck.
I did the same thing to her as I did the Light Brahma. She broke in two days and I returned her to the flock without incident. She never went broody again.

I've had several wannabe broodies over the years, isolated in the garage away from the others for one night did the trick.
Good luck and I hope this helps. Broodies drive me nuts.

Thanks, Dawg. I'll see how this goes, but moving them out of the run and into the garage may be the next step in a few days.

If they relapse, back to broody jail for a five day reminder.
