What do you prefer and do you switch back and forth from winter to summer I am just curious what is most beneficial for the chickens. I dont want mine to lay all winter since I raise them for breeding not for eggs so I don't want them to get burned out sooner.

also does anyone just feed scratch all winter instead?

Scratch alone is not good for them. Its fast burn energy food for them. There's not enough nutrients in scratch. Its more of a treat food to give them in the old months. Helps keep them warm metabolically. I keep my girls on their regular layer feed year round. Laying hens need specific nutrients to be healthy. Its the shorter day time hours that will slow their egg laying production during the winter. Food has no bearing on that. Hope this answers your questions okay.
