View media item 2868Three stray chickens have adopted our yard. They are roosting in a large evergreen bush. Winter is coming and I need a coop. I want them to be warm but not confined in a one way in, one way out structure. I'm wondering if a coop with two doors, one a ramp to the ground and one to a walkway leading to the horizontal branches of the very large evergreen bush they are roosting in will allow them to escape if a **** or possum enters via the ramp? I am planning on a towel stapled over the doors cut down the middle to cover the two doors for drafts. A flat panel heater will take the chill off in the upper part of the 2x4 laid horizontal roost. Side will open for cleaning as three nesting boxes will have doors for egg collection. A 300 watt equivalent led motion sensing flood light will be on the ground ramp side to help scare away predators. If I make a coop with one door and forget to lock them in at night a predator could corner them without a back door for them to escape out of. I cant find any reference on this entrance, exit two door idea. Any thoughts? What kind of chickens are these? Thanks! ~Kevin and Patricia.
I guess the reason you're not finding it is that no one does it. If a predator gets in a coop at night chances of the chickens escaping out of any door are slim to none. At night chickens go into a type of stasis which makes it very easy to pick them off.
And Welcome! Folks on the Forum will be helpful with your coop plans once you decide what direction you wish to go, so don't hesitate to ask. It sounds as if you have been doing some planning already.
