You may wonder why chickens should wear sweaters, but I implore you to ask instead, why not? Who said chickens were too good for stylish winter clothing? Dogs wear t-shirts. Horses wear blankets. Chickens should not be out in the cold, feeling left out. What chickens should be is clothed in sweaters!
This chicken obviously could benefit from a sweater.
Chicken sweaters actually do have a purpose other than making you look like an insane person who likes putting clothing on poultry. It is typical for chickens to molt when the days get shorter and cooler weather rolls in during the fall/winter months. Some chickens will have a soft molt while others will have a hard molt (see our previous article on molting here) and molting, especially hard molting, will leave your chicken with areas of exposed skin. This exposed skin can be damaged by pecking from other chickens as well as extreme wind or cold. Thus, a sweater on your chicken can act as a protective barrier!
Chicken sweaters can be bought online. They can also be made with the pattern below. However you come across sweaters for your chickens, rest assured that your chickens will look awesome and will probably be the talk of the town.
