I need advice on a sick pullet
First off let me start off by apologizing for my ignorance and not vaccinating or deworming my chickens since I started raising them in April. I thought I was doing everything right and my chickens have always looked so good and healthy from what others have told me when they've seen them.
Here's my issue... -
Laying is Close
Today, all of our chickens are 16 weeks old. Depending on our chickens, they may start laying in two weeks or another month, we do not know.
However, Wigwam has been doing his nesting call a lot and showing the hens where to nest in the shavings of the coop. They mostly ignore him.
I am ordering nesting box mats today. They may come in a few days so I can prepare the nesting boxes. I also enjoy crafts so I may sew them some nesting box curtains.
Wigwam has not been harassing the hens at all, so far that I can tell. Every so often I will hear a little flapping/squawking commotion in the coop, but Atari and Wigwam like to roughhouse a lot for some reason, so that may be them. -
At what age to hens go broody?
We have a 7 month old easter Egger that has only been laying for 2 months and she just went broody. Is this normal? At least we think that is what it is. She gets all puffed up and makes a funny noise when we get eggs out from under her. I took her out of the nest several times today and she also spent a couple of hours in a separate cage to distract her. She doesn't seem sick. Could she be broody already? -
Poor rooster behavior?
My rooster has two hens . When I uncover the food, he eats and pecks the girls away. He won't let them eat until he's done and if they come over to the bowl he pecks them away. When he's done, he still guards the bowl for a while and then lets them eat. What do I do? -
Predators
Something killed one of my hens 6 days ago. It ate the hens neck. No feather loss. Hen was killed around 930 am saturday, I heard a commotion, chickens in the red coop flew from behind the shed into their run. The main flock in the yard didn't do a thing and didn't act like a predator was around. So I didn't think about it and found my hen dead later that day by the shrubs .
This morning at daybreak I go to feed my chickens in that coop. I walk out and see my tetra like this. Last night everyone was on the roost fine. This morning she is here,at the bottom of the floor with her neck eaten and feathers around..
Found one small hole by the pen door at the corner that was hard to see ...
