This is my first year of backyard chicken raising and I was thinking about winter and is there an easy way to keep the water from freezing.

i agree, heated water dish works perfect... unless you are like me and dont have power to the coop.. then you just give fresh water a couple times a day and bust the ice...

It doesnt get bitter cold here in South Carolina,..but it does drop below freezing quiet often in the wintertime. I have a 15 gallon galvanized tub that I use for a watering trough......I paint the outside of that a flat black.....(outside) the black helps absorb the ambient heat and helps keep the water from being frozen. Unless its bitter cold and no sun shine....the water may freeze over night but will soon thaw due to the heat absorption....

It helps us.......your mileage may vary depend on your climate.
